Assam Chief Minister Criticizes Gaurav Gogoi Over Childrens Citizenship

Guwahati, February 8: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched a political attack on Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi regarding the British citizenship of his two children. Sarma stated that this issue raises serious questions about personal decisions made by public representatives.

In an interview, Sarma compared Gogoi to senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, noting that despite her Italian heritage, she never insisted on securing Italian citizenship for her children.

Sarma pointed out that Sonia Gandhi has never prioritized Italian citizenship for her son and daughter. In contrast, the MP from Jorhat ensured that his children became British citizens.

The Chief Minister alleged that this decision reflects a deeper mindset and cannot be dismissed as a private matter when it involves a sitting MP. He claimed that Gogoi voluntarily renounced Indian citizenship for one of his children, which he believes warrants public scrutiny.

“This is not a matter of personal attacks. When you are an MP, your actions and decisions are subject to public debate,” Sarma emphasized. He added that in a country like India, issues related to citizenship become even more critical, especially when national security is at stake.

Sarma further alleged that there were inconsistencies in Gogoi’s previous public statements regarding his children’s citizenship status. He mentioned that these issues emerged during an ongoing investigation into the alleged foreign connections of Gogoi’s family.

The Chief Minister also urged Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to take action against Gaurav Gogoi, as he claims that the Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha has renounced citizenship for his children.

Additionally, Sarma made serious allegations that Gaurav Gogoi was digitally inactive for at least ten days during a trip to Pakistan, while the Pakistani Ministry of Home Affairs altered the Congress leader’s visa permit.
