Spin Bowlers Key in T20 World Cup Semifinal, Says Mitchell Santner

Kolkata, March 4: New Zealand is set to face South Africa in the first semifinal of the T20 World Cup 2026 today. Ahead of the match, New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner commented on the Eden Gardens pitch, stating it appears favorable for batting. However, he emphasized that spin bowlers will still play a crucial role in the game.

The New Zealand team arrived directly in Kolkata from Sri Lanka. Santner noted that an extra day of rest would have been beneficial, but the players have had a solid practice session and are fully prepared for the match. He acknowledged the differing conditions between Colombo and Kolkata, but mentioned that at this level, all teams have extensive cricket experience, making quick adaptation essential.

Santner also pointed out that many players from his team have participated in the IPL and bilateral series in India, giving them valuable experience with local conditions. However, he stressed that experience alone is not enough; adapting to the conditions on match day is more critical.

Reaching the semifinals indicates that the opposing team is strong, and South Africa has performed exceptionally well in this tournament, suggesting a tough contest ahead. Discussing the pitch, Santner remarked that the previous match showed a flat wicket, which is beneficial for batsmen, yet spin bowlers will still have their role to play. Fast bowlers must also maintain the right line and length, as the dimensions of the ground will significantly impact strategy.

Regarding the match scheduled on Holi, Santner expressed that the festive atmosphere in India is unique, and his team aims to perform well and add to the celebration of colors. Overall, the New Zealand team is filled with confidence and fully prepared to secure victory against South Africa in the semifinal.
