New Delhi, March 3: The Indian cricket team has secured its place in the semifinals of the T20 World Cup 2026. Under the captaincy of Suryakumar Yadav, the team is set to face England on March 5 for the sixth time in T20 World Cup history. However, despite the tournament being held on home soil, India’s journey to the Super 8 stage has been fraught with challenges. The team has struggled to display the championship quality expected of them.
The primary issue for Team India has been their batting performance. In their opening match against the USA, the weaknesses in the batting order were exposed. The star-studded lineup collapsed like a house of cards, losing six key wickets for just 77 runs. Fortunately, captain Suryakumar Yadav’s impressive 84-run innings helped the team reach a respectable total.
Against Namibia, Ishan Kishan and Hardik Pandya managed to score runs, but the rest of the batting lineup underperformed. Even against Namibia’s relatively weak bowling attack, players like Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma struggled. Yadav scored just 12 runs off 13 balls, while Varma could only muster 25 runs from 21 balls.
In the match against Pakistan, Ishan Kishan was the standout performer, scoring a powerful 77 runs off 40 balls. However, apart from him, only Suryakumar Yadav managed to cross the 30-run mark, scoring 32 runs from 29 balls. The situation was similar against the Netherlands, where Shivam Dube scored 66 runs off 31 balls.
Despite facing smaller teams in the group stage, players like Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, and even captain Suryakumar Yadav struggled to accumulate runs. There were hopes that the Indian batsmen would make a strong comeback in the Super 8 round, showcasing the powerful play they are known for.
However, the Super 8 round saw the situation worsen. Against South Africa, India’s formidable batting lineup could only muster 111 runs. In contrast, the team found its rhythm against Zimbabwe, achieving its highest score of the T20 World Cup.
Sanju Samson‘s explosive 97 runs against the West Indies secured a victory for the team, but the rest of the batsmen continued to falter.
Expectations were high for Abhishek Sharma, but he has been a major disappointment in the tournament, scoring only 80 runs in six matches. In three of those matches, he failed to score at all. Known for his aggressive batting, Suryakumar Yadav has also struggled to accumulate runs, with a strike rate of just 135 in this World Cup. Hardik Pandya has also failed to deliver in crucial moments.
Overall, Ishan Kishan has been the only player demonstrating consistency in performance. The biggest issue for India’s batting lineup in this World Cup has been the inability of all batsmen to come together and score runs. This weakness could prove detrimental in the high-pressure semifinal match against England on March 5.
