Jaipur, February 23: Congress legislators staged a walkout during the Zero Hour in the Rajasthan Assembly on Monday, protesting the alleged rape and murder of a minor girl in Bikaner. This incident led to chaos in the house, prompting sharp remarks from Assembly Speaker Vasudev Devnani.
The walkout followed a heated debate between Congress and BJP legislators. Congress MLA Dungaram Ghedar raised the issue during Zero Hour, demanding action against the perpetrators.
State Home Minister Jawahar Singh Bedham confirmed that the police investigation is ongoing, with the minor’s body currently in the mortuary and senior police officials present at the scene. He assured that the culprits would be apprehended soon.
Opposition leader Tikaram Julie questioned the delay in arrests, highlighting the rising crimes against girls. Meanwhile, the government’s Chief Whip Jogeshwar Garg accused the opposition of politicizing the issue. Home Minister Bedham labeled it as “cheap politics,” while Julie countered that asking when the killer would be arrested is not political.
Following a heated debate, opposition leaders walked out, with Congress MLA Manish Yadav initially called for a motion but later returned to speak, prompting a stern warning from Devnani.
Speaker Vasudev Devnani remarked, “You want to be on both sides—walking out and speaking at the same time is unacceptable.”
When a BJP MLA interrupted him, Devnani expressed frustration, stating, “Why are you speaking when I have already spoken? If you are greater than me, come and sit in my place. The ruling party should cooperate, and the opposition should also cooperate.”
In Bikaner, Rajasthan, a 13-year-old girl was found dead under suspicious circumstances on Saturday. Local residents protested, alleging that the minor had been raped.
The girl was on her way to take her Class 8 exams. When she did not arrive at school, the administration informed her parents, leading to a search. Her body was later discovered near a forest.
The police reported that they are examining technical evidence and continue to investigate the case from all angles.
