Guwahati, February 22: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the inauguration of a newly constructed integrated terminal at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBI) in Borjhar on Sunday. This development is a significant achievement for Assam’s aviation infrastructure.
Speaking to reporters after the inauguration, Sarma highlighted that the new terminal is designed to significantly increase passenger capacity and enhance the overall travel experience. This positions Guwahati as a key aviation gateway to Northeast India and neighboring Southeast Asian regions.
Sarma also revealed plans for two five-star hotels to be built near the airport terminal, in response to the growing number of domestic and international travelers. He expressed optimism that these hospitality projects would strengthen tourism infrastructure and create job opportunities for local residents.
Emphasizing future expansion plans, the Chief Minister noted that, given the rapidly increasing air traffic in the region, the state government is exploring the possibility of constructing an additional terminal at LGBI Airport within the next two years.
Furthermore, he mentioned that the government aims to develop an ‘aero hub’ in Borjhar, similar to major aviation centers like Delhi.
“Our goal is to transform Guwahati into a major aviation and logistics hub for the entire Northeast,” Sarma stated. The proposed aero hub is expected to enhance connectivity, boost trade, tourism, and investment, and reduce reliance on metropolitan areas outside the region.
The new integrated terminal reflects Assam’s aspirations for economic development and its emergence as a key connectivity and commercial center in Eastern India.
Sarma added that the project has been executed with a focus on modern architecture, sustainable development, and passenger-friendly amenities.
According to airport officials, the integrated terminal is equipped with modern facilities, advanced security infrastructure, expanded check-in counters, improved baggage management systems, and enhanced parking and road transport connectivity.
Sarma emphasized that the expansion of LGBI Airport will play a crucial role in supporting Assam’s development agenda by improving connectivity, attracting investment, and promoting tourism.
He reiterated the state government’s commitment to work in coordination with the Indian Aviation Authority and the central government to further strengthen aviation infrastructure in Assam.
The popular Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport is the busiest airport in the Northeast and serves as a vital transport hub connecting the region to major cities across India.
