Voice AI and Local Language Interfaces Empowering Underserved Populations

New Delhi, February 19: Voice AI and local language interfaces are emerging as primary means to reach underserved populations, according to a report released on Thursday.

The report, titled “India’s AI Impact Startups,” was unveiled at the India AI Impact Summit 2026. It highlights that an increasing number of creators are investing in the Made-in-India foundation model.

The Ministry of Electronics and IT stated that this repository is the first systematic mapping of India’s impact-driven AI ecosystem. It illustrates how Indian founders are developing solutions with local designs and global relevance. The analysis reveals an ecosystem that is collaboratively experimenting and reinforcing itself.

The report details 110 startups and non-profit organizations utilizing artificial intelligence for significant social and economic impact. Published by India AI and Kalpa Impact, it covers various sectors, including healthcare, agriculture, education, climate change, financial inclusion, urban mobility, and public service delivery.

Abhishek Singh, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and IT, Director General of NIC, and CEO of the India AI Mission, stated, “The repository of over 100 AI impact startups and non-profits serves as a practical resource providing stakeholders with a systematic overview of initiatives aligned with public purposes. For policymakers, it highlights capabilities ready for integration with existing digital public infrastructure. For industry and investors, it showcases enterprises with technological maturity, scalability, and long-term potential. Overall, it acts as an integrated reference to support informed engagement and adoption.”

Mohammad Y. Safirullah K., an IAS officer with the India AI Mission, remarked, “India’s AI ecosystem is maturing rapidly. This compilation reflects a pivotal moment where Indian startups are transitioning from promising pilot projects to comprehensive solutions serving millions. The India AI Mission is committed to fostering this ecosystem, and this publication provides stakeholders with clear insights into areas already making a positive impact.”
