Central Water Commission to Host Workshop on Flood Management

New Delhi, February 9: The Central Water Commission (CWC), operating under the Ministry of Water Resources, River Development, and Ganga Conservation, is set to conduct a one-day workshop on Monday. This workshop will focus on preparing and reviewing Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) related to flood forecasting services and flood management.

The primary aim of this workshop is to enable the CWC to inform all stakeholders about its existing services and new initiatives while gathering their feedback. It seeks to enhance coordination between the central and state governments in planning flood forecasting, preparedness, and management. Additionally, the workshop will emphasize how state governments can effectively utilize the CWC’s forecasting and decision support services, with collaboration from other central institutions.

Governments of states affected by floods will also have the opportunity to share their initiatives related to flood forecasting and discuss how they can work more effectively with CWC services.

This workshop is expected to strengthen preparedness for flood response, improve the quality of flood management projects, and enhance coordination among various agencies. This aligns with the government’s policy to bolster disaster response capabilities and adapt water management to climate conditions.

The morning technical sessions will cover discussions on CWC’s flood forecasting capabilities, including short-term and seven-day forecasts, flood inundation predictions, dam operation assistance, GLOF monitoring, and the use of AI or machine learning. The sessions will also incorporate extended-range rainfall forecasts from IMD and sudden flood forecasting. State governments will share their experiences with the CWC.

In the afternoon, discussions will focus on guidelines for preparing, submitting, and reviewing DPRs related to flood management and erosion control projects. The goal is to enhance project quality and ensure timely reviews. Improvements to these guidelines will be made based on suggestions from the states.

The workshop will conclude with a session led by CWC Chairman Anupam Prasad, where key findings and future directions will be discussed. The workshop will be inaugurated by V. L. Kanta Rao, Secretary of the Ministry of Water Resources, River Development, and Ganga Conservation, and will include senior officials from the CWC and state governments.
