Beijing, February 8: Recently, the Forestry and Grassland Bureau of Tibet reported significant progress in grassland restoration during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025). The region has successfully restored 2.023 million hectares of degraded grassland, stabilizing the total grassland area at 8.66 million hectares and increasing the overall vegetation cover to 50%.
During this period, Tibet adhered to the principle of prioritizing natural restoration while complementing it with artificial methods. The region actively implemented ecological restoration projects for degraded pastures, drawing on advanced experiences from provinces like Qinghai. Measures included no-till reseeding, fencing, controlling invasive weeds, planting artificial grasses, improving grassland quality, and aerial seeding, leading to a gradual recovery of grassland ecology.
Additionally, the area of wetlands in Tibet has expanded to 8.169 million hectares, with 100,000 hectares of degraded wetlands preserved and restored. The area of desertified land remained stable at 20.961 million hectares, with approximately 280,000 hectares undergoing treatment.
