The Legacy of Rajiv Kapoor: A Stars Struggle in Bollywood

Mumbai, February 8: The Kapoor family is synonymous with Bollywood, having made significant contributions to Hindi cinema for decades. Members of this illustrious family continue to thrive in the industry, enjoying the fruits of their stardom. Icons like Raj Kapoor, Shammi Kapoor, Shashi Kapoor, Randhir Kapoor, and Rishi Kapoor have left an indelible mark on the film world. Today, Karisma and Kareena Kapoor carry forward the family legacy, while Ranbir Kapoor has established himself as a current superstar after navigating early career challenges.

However, one member of the Kapoor clan did not achieve the same level of recognition on screen. We are referring to Rajiv Kapoor, who explored various facets of filmmaking, including acting and directing, but faced setbacks in his career. February 9 marks the anniversary of his passing.

Rajiv Kapoor was the son of legendary actor Raj Kapoor, who left this world at a young age. Struggles with alcoholism and neglecting his health brought him close to death. Interestingly, Rajiv’s recognition in Hindi cinema stemmed not from his father but from his uncle, Shammi Kapoor. Rajiv himself revealed that he bore a striking resemblance to his uncle, leading audiences to associate his films with Shammi’s legacy.

The situation was such that Rajiv’s characters were often portrayed with Shammi Kapoor in mind. His first film alongside Shammi was “Ek Jaan Hain Hum,” released in 1983, where Shammi played the role of Rajiv’s father. The resemblance was so pronounced that audiences began to see Rajiv through the lens of Shammi’s image, which influenced the film offers he received. However, after a few projects, Rajiv realized the need to carve out his own identity and decided to develop his unique style and persona.

Following his role in “Ek Jaan Hain Hum,” Rajiv was offered a part in “Ram Teri Ganga Maili” by his father, whom he affectionately called ‘Sir.’ When this opportunity arose, he canceled all other film commitments. This film became a massive hit and catapulted him to stardom overnight. Yet, this success in Bollywood was short-lived.

Rajiv appeared in several films, including “Lover Boy,” “Preeti,” “Zalzala,” “Aasmaan,” and “Hum To Chale Pardes,” but none made a significant impact at the box office. Subsequently, he ventured into directing, helming films like “Prem Granth” and “Aa Ab Laut Chalen.”
