Lula Criticizes U.S. Involvement in Cuba and Venezuela Affairs

São Paulo, February 8: Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has expressed strong objections to the United States’ role in the internal affairs of Cuba and Venezuela. He emphasized that the solutions to any country’s problems should come from its own people, not from external forces intervening.

During a speech at the Workers’ Party’s 46th anniversary celebration in Salvador, Bahia, Lula stated that Brazil stands in full solidarity with the Cuban people. He accused U.S. policies and speculations of exacerbating the tragedy faced by the Cuban population.

Lula remarked, “Our country stands with the Cuban people, and as a political party, we must seek ways to assist them.”

He also targeted the U.S. regarding the situation in Venezuela, asserting, “The solution to Venezuela’s problems will come from its own people, not from the United States or Trump.”

Meanwhile, tensions have escalated regarding discussions between the U.S. and Cuba. On Thursday, the White House dismissed concerns raised by Cuban leadership, stating that President Donald Trump is open to diplomacy and that dialogue between the two nations is already underway.

A journalist referenced a statement from Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel, who indicated that Cuba would only engage in talks with the U.S. under conditions of no pressure, without preconditions, at an equal level, and with respect for sovereignty. The Cuban government also refuted Trump’s claim that discussions are ongoing.

In response, White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt stated that the Cuban government is in a critical situation and should exercise caution in its statements against the U.S. However, she reiterated that President Trump is always ready for diplomatic conversations. Levitt further claimed that discussions between the U.S. and the Cuban government are indeed taking place at this time.
