Mohammad Azharuddin: A Legendary Figure in Indian Cricket

New Delhi, February 8: Mohammad Azharuddin is a monumental name in Indian cricket, known for his prowess as both a batsman and captain. He led the Indian team for an extended period and was a formidable middle-order batsman, significantly contributing to the team’s batting strength in both Test and ODI formats. Renowned as the “Magician of Wrists,” Azharuddin holds a unique record that remains unmatched.

Born on February 8, 1963, in Hyderabad, Azharuddin made his debut for India in ODIs and Tests against England in 1985 at the age of 22.

He is the only player in cricket history to score centuries in each of his first three Test innings. This remarkable start indicated his potential for a long and successful career in Indian cricket, which indeed came to fruition.

Between 1985 and 2000, Azharuddin played 99 Tests and 334 ODIs for the Indian team. He amassed 6,215 runs in Tests, including 22 centuries and 21 half-centuries, with a highest score of 199. In ODIs, he scored 9,378 runs in 308 innings, featuring 7 centuries and 58 half-centuries, with a top score of 153 not out. At the time of his retirement, he was among the leading run-scorers in ODIs.

From 1990 to 1999, Azharuddin captained India in 47 Tests and 174 ODIs, leading the team to 14 Test victories and 90 ODI wins.

His career faced an abrupt end due to allegations of match-fixing. After being acquitted of these charges, he transitioned into politics. Currently, he serves as a Cabinet Minister in the Telangana government, overseeing the Minority Welfare and Public Enterprises Department.
