Rajasthan to Utilize Indus River Water for Regional Benefit

Jaipur, February 7: Rajasthan’s Water Resources Minister C.R. Patil announced on Saturday that the flow of the Indus River, which heads towards Pakistan, will be diverted for India’s benefit. This initiative aims to provide water resources to Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Delhi.

While addressing the media at the BJP headquarters in Jaipur, Minister Patil stated that the central government is formulating an action plan for this purpose. A detailed project report (DPR) has already been prepared to redirect the water flowing towards Pakistan.

He further emphasized that work on the Yamuna Water Project will be expedited to ensure better water management and maximize benefits for states across the country. Patil noted that Rajasthan is entitled to a fair share of Yamuna water, but previous state governments have failed to make substantial efforts in this direction.

A recent agreement has been reached between the Haryana and Rajasthan governments for the preparation of the DPR, and work on the project will commence soon. The estimated cost of bringing Yamuna water through a pipeline is projected to be between ₹77,000 crore and ₹1 lakh crore.

Currently, Rajasthan faces a significant water shortage, but Patil expressed optimism that it will become a water-rich state in the future. He mentioned that continuous coordination between Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma and the central government will yield positive results.

The minister also announced significant progress in providing Yamuna water to three districts in Rajasthan’s Shekhawati region. Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has given his consent, and the DPR preparation process will begin shortly.

Patil assured that technical efforts are underway to ensure Rajasthan receives its rightful share of surplus water. The revised DPR has been submitted to the Ministry of Water Resources and is currently under review.
