New Delhi, February 7: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has apprehended a scientist from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) for accepting a bribe. The incident involves the Foreign Manufacturer certification Department (FMDC). Reports indicate that the accused scientist solicited a bribe of ₹70,000 to expedite the clearance of a certification file and was caught in the act of receiving the money.
The CBI received a complaint alleging that the scientist demanded money for processing the FMDC certification file. The complainant claimed that without the payment, their file would not progress. Acting on this complaint, the CBI registered a case on February 6.
Following this, the CBI swiftly organized a raid. On the same day, they set up a trap and caught the scientist red-handed while he was accepting the ₹70,000 bribe. The CBI also conducted searches at both the scientist’s home and office.
The arrested scientist, Abhijit Singh, holds the position of Scientist-C at FMDC, BIS, ITO, New Delhi. The CBI confirmed that Abhijit had demanded and attempted to receive money, which is against the law.
With this arrest, the CBI has made it clear that it will not tolerate corruption. The investigation is ongoing, and the CBI is verifying whether similar cases exist elsewhere. It will also examine how the accused solicited the bribe and the extent of the network involved.
Previously, on Thursday, the CBI arrested Assistant Garrison Engineer Sunil Nikam and Junior Engineer Suresh Mhaskey from the Military Engineering Services (MES) in Khadki, Pune, for demanding and accepting a bribe. The complainant alleged that both officials were asking for ₹600,000 in exchange for their services.
