New Delhi, February 7: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor’s private member bill regarding the rights of Kashmiri Pandits could not be introduced in Parliament due to disruptions. Tharoor expressed his disappointment on social media platform X on Saturday.
He wrote, “Due to the uproar in Parliament on Friday, I was unable to present my private member bill on the rights of Kashmiri Pandits, which I initially drafted and submitted in 2021. At that time, it was put on hold for the remainder of the seventeenth Lok Sabha. I resubmitted it during the eighteenth Lok Sabha last year, and finally, after five years, it was scheduled for discussion on Friday. Now, it will have to wait longer.”
On Friday, the proceedings of Parliament were adjourned until February 9. Notably, the entire week has seen tumultuous sessions, particularly due to a controversy surrounding former Army Chief MM Naravane’s book, which disrupted the Lok Sabha. The Congress party alleged that Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi was not allowed to speak in the Lok Sabha, leading to continuous protests from the opposition throughout the week.
As a result of the disruptions, eight Congress MPs were suspended from the House for violating parliamentary rules. Following their suspension, Rahul Gandhi joined the protesting MPs in the Parliament premises. Opposition members also raised concerns regarding a trade agreement between India and the United States, contributing to the uproar in the House.
This week, there was also controversy over opposition members allegedly shouting slogans within the ruling party’s bell in the Lok Sabha. It was claimed that opposition members could have targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi during these protests.
