Ahmedabad Schools Enhance English Proficiency for Students

Ahmedabad, February 7: Currently, 172,576 students are enrolled in 453 municipal schools operated under the Ahmedabad Municipal Primary Education Committee. These students receive education from 4,586 teachers in Gujarati, Hindi, English, and Urdu mediums.

To ensure the holistic development of students, regular academic and co-curricular activities are being conducted. Students are provided opportunities for active participation in various fields, including language proficiency, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), mathematics-science exhibitions, arts-music, literature, public speaking, and sports.

Under the guidance and inspiration of Municipal Commissioner Banchanidhi Pani, 297 Gujarati medium and 56 English medium schools, totaling 353, are collaborating with the English Gurukul organization to enhance students’ English language skills through an online application. This initiative began as a pilot project in five Gujarati and five English medium schools. Following positive results from the pilot, it has been implemented across all Gujarati and English medium schools.

According to the Municipal Commissioner, it is essential for all students in the school board to communicate confidently in English, the international language. This project is conducted in two parts: a teacher application and a student application. Each week, one period is dedicated to English language learning at the school level. Currently, approximately 112,000 students are learning English through the English Gurukul organization, focusing on developing reading, writing, and communication skills through story-based videos.

Notably, a report presented by the English Gurukul organization, after studying schools in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, revealed several important findings. The report indicates that the school board is maximizing the use of municipal school infrastructure. Operating schools in two shifts ensures full utilization of government facilities.

According to the organization’s survey, 85% of students and parents expressed satisfaction with the cleanliness and learning environment of the schools. Through the ‘Future Class’ initiative, supported by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, 92% of students were found capable of preparing digital presentations, compared to the national average of 65%.

Data-driven analysis from the G-Shala app recorded a 15% increase in overall academic performance among students. Additionally, under the state’s Gunotsav 2.0 program, the number of C-grade and D-grade schools has remained negligible over the past two years. Regular monitoring has led to a 10% increase in student attendance and a 15% improvement in teaching quality, while other states lack such monitoring systems.

The report also revealed that 80% of students regularly use the robotics lab, resulting in a 30% increase in student participation in regional and national science competitions. This success reflects the effectiveness of practical teaching methods.

Ultimately, a report presented by the Bengaluru-based organization, after studying schools in four states, describes the education system of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation schools as infrastructure-supported, technology-enabled, quality-driven, and aligned with the goals of the National Education Policy 2020. The report praises the efforts of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation and the school board for their initiatives benefiting underprivileged and middle-class students. Currently, approximately 172,000 students are directly benefiting from these initiatives.
