New Delhi, February 6: February is not just a month of celebrations; it also poses Health challenges. The transition between winter and spring often leads to fluctuating temperatures, causing discomfort.
During sunny days, people tend to avoid warm clothing and crave cold beverages. However, many are unaware that this mild chill can be the root cause of various illnesses.
In North India, February brings pleasant sunshine along with a slight chill, marking a seasonal shift. This period is crucial as the body’s immunity is significantly affected. The cold winds from the mountains combined with the bright sun create an ideal environment for viruses and bacteria to thrive. Consequently, cases of viral infections, cough, fever, and typhoid peak during February and March, especially around Holi.
Ayurveda recommends specific care from February to March to bolster immunity. It emphasizes the importance of strengthening the body’s defenses during this time. One effective remedy is consuming a decoction of Giloy and Tulsi. This herbal mix acts like medicine, known in Ayurveda as ‘Amrita’. Drinking this concoction every morning can reduce the risk of infections.
Another beneficial practice is the intake of ginger (sonth) and honey. This combination helps alleviate cough and throat ailments, loosening mucus in the lungs. Regular consumption can also aid in preventing colds.
While it’s tempting to drink cold water or beverages during this transitional period, Ayurveda advises sticking to lukewarm water throughout the month. Drinking chilled water from the fridge can be a significant mistake in February. Additionally, it’s wise to avoid yogurt and ice cream, opting instead for warm, winter-friendly foods. Despite the rising temperatures, don’t shy away from wearing warm clothing.
