New Delhi, February 6: The South-West District Police have achieved a significant breakthrough by dismantling an interstate gang involved in organized mobile phone theft. The Sarojini Nagar police team arrested one suspect and apprehended a minor during this operation. A total of 46 stolen mobile phones, including 13 iPhones, were recovered and returned to their rightful owners.
The investigation began after an e-FIR was filed on December 27, 2025, regarding a mobile phone theft at the Sarojini Nagar market. Analysis of CCTV footage revealed two suspects engaging in suspicious activities around the complainant. Acting on credible information received on December 28, Sub-Inspector Anoop Kumar and Head Constable Rajendra apprehended a 15-year-old minor near Gate No. 2 of the Sarojini Nagar market. During police questioning, the minor confessed to multiple mobile thefts in crowded markets and revealed that he handed the stolen phones to Abhishek Kumar, also known as Shubham, aged 27.
Following this revelation, a special team was formed under the leadership of Sarojini Nagar SHO Atul Tyagi. With oversight from the ACP of Safdarjung Enclave, a raid was conducted at the suspects’ rented accommodation in Ghazipur, East Delhi, where Abhishek Kumar was arrested. The raid yielded 34 stolen mobile phones and 23 mobile covers.
Utilizing technical surveillance, IMEI tracking, and the CEIR portal, police successfully traced and recovered an additional 12 stolen mobile phones from various locations. After completing all legal formalities, documentation verification, and ownership confirmation, a total of 46 mobile phones were returned to their rightful owners at the Sarojini Nagar police station.
Investigations revealed that the suspects targeted crowded markets during the winter season. They used polyethylene sheets to conceal their hand movements while deftly extracting phones from jackets or coat pockets. The stolen phones were immediately handed over to the main suspect, who planned to send them to Nepal and Bangladesh through intermediaries to avoid detection.
This police operation has led to the resolution of a total of 10 e-FIR cases registered at various police stations, including Sarojini Nagar, Hauz Khas, Rajendra Nagar, Krishna Nagar, Kotwali, Palam Village, Jamia Nagar, Timarpur, and Swaroop Nagar. The remaining 37 mobile phones were linked to various lost reports.
Delhi Police stated that this successful operation exemplifies the technical expertise, professional investigation, and community-oriented policing of the South-West District Police. The district police assured the public that they will continue to take results-oriented actions to ensure public safety and strengthen community trust.
