Semenistaja and Zhizhen Advance to Quarterfinals at Mumbai Open

Mumbai, February 4: Wednesday marked another thrilling day at the 2026 Mumbai Open WTA 125K series. The tournament, hosted by the Maharashtra State Lawn Tennis Association (MSLTA), showcased intense action as top seed Darja Semenistaja and Liolya Zhizhen secured their spots in the next round. Mananchaya Sawangkeaw and Mei Yamaguchi also advanced in the singles draw.

Meanwhile, India’s Prarthana Thombare and her partner Alevtina Ibragimova faced a setback in the doubles main draw, losing in the quarterfinals.

The day began with a tough match for top seed Darja Semenistaja against Japan’s Mai Hontama. The Latvian player struggled initially but rallied back to win the first set after trailing. She clinched the match by winning the second set in a tiebreak.

In a match lasting one hour and 55 minutes, 2024 edition champion Semenistaja triumphed with a score of 6-4, 7-6 (7-3). On Court 1, a fierce battle unfolded between Mei Yamaguchi and Yasmin Kabbaj, lasting two hours and 40 minutes. The Japanese player made an impressive comeback, winning the thrilling three-set match 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) to reach the quarterfinals.

In another match, third seed Liolya Zhizhen easily defeated Japan’s Miho Kuramochi. The French player, who has a career-high ranking of 91, won in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 6-3 on Center Court.

Last season’s runner-up, Mananchaya Sawangkeaw, also advanced to the next round with a strong performance against Japan’s Misaki Matsuda, winning 6-4, 6-1. In the doubles main draw, India’s Prarthana Thombare and her partner Alevtina Ibragimova took to Center Court. However, they lost to the second-seeded pair of Polina Eryatseva and Elena Pridankina, who won decisively with a score of 6-1, 6-1 to secure a spot in the semifinals.

In the final match of the day, singles top seed Darja Semenistaja teamed up with Juzana Pavlikovska to face the duo of Hiroko Kuwata and Park So-hyun in the doubles main draw. The latter pair won the match 6-0, 6-4, concluding the day’s play.
