Assams Chief Minister to Sue Congress Leaders for Defamation

Guwahati, February 4: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has launched a strong counterattack against political assaults from senior Congress leaders. He announced plans to initiate civil and criminal defamation proceedings against Congress leaders Gaurav Gogoi, Bhupesh Baghel, Jitendra Singh Alwar, and Debabrata Saikia.

Sarma stated on the social media platform X that the legal action will commence on February 9. Previously, during a press conference, he accused the Congress leaders of making false, malicious, and defamatory statements against him.

Declaring that he would not bow to political pressure, the Chief Minister emphasized that the era of escaping through attacks is over. He challenged his opponents to prove their allegations in court, asserting that if they possess any courage or evidence, they should present every accusation before the judiciary.

Sarma expressed that he is not intimidated by propaganda, orchestrated defamation, or political theatrics. He also accused Congress leaders of acting on the directives of the Gandhi family.

This response from the Chief Minister came after Gaurav Gogoi, a Congress MP, made political attacks against him in the presence of former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel.

Gogoi launched a portal named Halls HBS Dot Com, aimed at questioning Sarma’s political journey and governance style, claiming it includes documents, videos, and other materials related to the Chief Minister’s public life.

As the Deputy Leader of Congress in the Lok Sabha, Gogoi emphasized that this initiative aims to present facts to the people of Assam and promote accountability. He mentioned that Congress has also released a pamphlet with similar content, which will be distributed across the state as part of a comprehensive public relations campaign.

Baghel supported these views, highlighting that transparency and accountability are essential elements of a democratic system.
