Bhubaneswar, February 4: The Odisha Forest Department has introduced AI-enabled cameras and drones this year to enhance early detection and rapid response to forest fires.
K. Murugesan, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Head of Forest Force, addressed reporters on Wednesday, highlighting that timely alerts from satellite-based fire detection have significantly improved response efficiency, achieving an impressive 99.7% success rate in preventing incidents and minimizing damage.
According to last year’s data, approximately 29,709 locations of forest fires were identified in Odisha. These incidents were primarily attributed to human negligence, dry grass, and fallen leaves accumulating in the forests.
Learning from previous experiences, the Forest Department has strengthened its preparations for the current fire season. District action plans have been developed across all districts, and approximately 20,461 kilometers of fire lines have been established and maintained in sensitive forest areas.
To improve ground-level response, the department has deployed 334 dedicated fire protection squads at the division, range, and beat levels. These teams are equipped with essential firefighting tools, including nearly 5,000 fire lift blowers and safety kits.
Murugesan stated, “The deployment of AI-enabled cameras and drones has enhanced our early warning and response systems. Active participation from forest protection committees, eco-development committees, and local communities has also been ensured. Awareness programs have already been conducted in 336 villages, and over 631 training sessions are planned for various field units. Additionally, around 200 NDRF personnel have received specialized training in forest fire prevention and control.”
He urged the public, especially those living near forests, not to ignite fires in or around wooded areas.
Murugesan warned that careless use of fire could cause severe damage to forests and wildlife. Community cooperation is essential to keep the forests fire-free.
