Mamata Banerjee Files New Petition in Supreme Court Over Voter List Dispute

New Delhi, February 4: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has filed another petition in the Supreme Court against the Special Intensive Review (SIR) of the Voter List. She has requested the court to prevent the Election Commission from removing any names from the voter list and to allow her to present her case personally.

In her petition, Banerjee has urged the Supreme Court to issue immediate directives regarding the SIR process. She warned that mandatory hearings, document rejections, and the use of micro-observers could lead to the widespread disenfranchisement of voters.

The new petition states that the Election Commission has issued circulars to many individuals for minor errors in their applications. The Chief Minister has demanded that no voter’s name be removed from the 2022 voter list and that no voter’s right to vote be compromised. Additionally, she has requested that documents such as Aadhaar, permanent residence certificates, Panchayat residence certificates, family registers, socio-economic caste census data, land or house allocation certificates, and other documents issued by competent state authorities be accepted by the Election Commission.

Banerjee has also sought permission to represent herself in court, stating that she is well-informed about the facts and circumstances of the case. As the Chief Minister of a state and the chairperson of the Trinamool Congress party, she expressed confidence in her understanding of court procedures and discipline. She believes that her personal representation will aid the court in resolving the matter effectively.

Before the hearing, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee arrived at the Supreme Court herself.
